Returned from Europe...Bought Some Mod Podge

When I got back from six months abroad I began to rework the postcards into something I could identify more with. I used photographs I took as well as actual postcards. I used a typewriter to write up parts of my writings from abroad. Currently I have about 50 cards total and am still going. This process and aesthetic is something I'm very attracted to.

New York Boys with Cameras

These two young men gave me a feeling of freedom, rebellion, and a strong urge to move to NYC as soon as possible. Ryan's seem pure and idealistic, whereas Dash's are gritty and crude.

Ryan McGinley

To see Ryan's work in motion watch Sigur Ros's Globbledigook.

Dash Snow
Dash began taking polaroids just so he could learn what he did the night before. His photos are untouched and crude looking. They give snapshots to the reckless life he led. Disturbing and humorous. Will always be criticized for not being an actual artist because he was "just" documenting his life.

When Trash is Arranged Properly...People Will Buy It

Tim Roelof
Dutch artist that works in the Kunsthaus Tacheles in Berlin. I was there last March and talked to the guy that was running Tim's studio/shop. He told us about Tim showing up a
Donatella Versace's home in Italy with his beloved dogs and a beer (I'm guessing more than one) to discuss him collaging for Donatella's Fall '08 collection. Imaging the two of them have a discussion is a comical and unexpected, but it resulted in a beautiful show.

Voyeur? Maybe.

Sophie Calle is a French artist who works with photographs and performances, placing herself in situations almost as if she and the people she encounters were fictional. She also imposes elements of her own life onto public places creating a personal narrative where she is both author and character. She has been called a detective and a voyeur and her pieces involve serious investigations as well as natural curiousity.

She crosses private boundaries to explore the meanings which might be hidden there and
exploits public spaces, investing them with a sense of intimacy.

________________

We start with euphemisms like "observant" and then slowly move to "people-watcher" then to "eavesdropper" to "stalker" and then we arrive at "voyeur". It's amazing how negative the words can sound... connotations changing with word choice (essentially they are all the same).

"Are you seeking or is it happenstance?"
Does it really matter? We all watch each other in some regard. Some advert their eyes quickly as if they're shameful for watching and/or listening to you. Others look into the pupils of your eyes and don't particularly give a shit whether you know or not. I find both types pleasant.

Photographers that Straddle the Fine Art - Fashion Line

These fashion photographers interest me because their work has elements of narrative, humor, and eroticism. Fashion photography will always be criticized (as anything fashion related is) for being more concerned with the commercial than the art...and for many that may be true. But the most renowned in the business are able to do both.

Guy Bourdin
I went to his exhibit at the Corso di Como gallery in Milan last year...I die!

*One should note fashion is best with beautiful naked people...it's an attitude.
